First 3rd Party Pad Released

First 3rd Party Pad Released

Performance has released a non-standard pad for Nintendo 64. How does it stand up?

The pad is a dark grey color that matches the N64 well. Note the PlayStation style grips. The back of the unit has an inconveniently positione Z-button and a memory card slot.

We just picked up a Superpad 64 Plus. At around $25 at most stores we checked it, it's about $10 cheaper than Nintendo's add-on pads.

The pad is shaped quite differently from the "3 udder" style of the Nintendo pads, and looks a bit like a PlayStation pad that has had an analog stick jammed onto it. We found, initially, that since the left and right handles are of different widths, that tha pad could be quite uncomfortable. After about an hour, though, we got used to it.

The buttons are all the same size, which means the pad works much better for fighting games like Mortal Kombat trilogy than the standard Nintendo pad, and the stick is much "stiffer," which is great for Wave Race. On the downside, the Z-button is positioned pretty uncomfortably.

Overall, we'd rather use the Nintendo pad, but if you want the $10 savings, or you plan to play a lot of Mortal Kombat, you probably won't be disappointed by this pad.
