Rumor: IBM will Offer To Buy Apple

Mac Observer:

Silly Rumor Department - JAGfn.com Publishes Rumor That IBM Will
Offer To Buy Apple
by Bryan Chaffin

When's the last time you heard that Microsoft/Disney/Sun was
going to buy Apple? On Friday afternoon, JAGfn.com
published a report that IBM was rumored to be preparing to
offer US$45 per share for Apple. For those keeping score at
home, that means that IBM would be purchasing Apple for a bit
less than twice the current share value. The very short blurb
published by the site (and relayed by NorthernLight.com):

Apple Computer (AAPL) $24.85 - Rumor that (IBM) will make a $45
a share bid for company. Neither company was available for comment.

As of this writing, JAGfn.com was inaccessible. You can read
the item yourself at NorthernLight.com. We also have a
discussion on this topic smoldering in the TMO Forums.

The Mac Observer Spin: What the heck would IBM want with Apple?
The company has been doing everything it could to exit
the consumer PC business, and has in fact dumped just about
everything except its portable line. In addition to little
quibbles like that, IBM has to be aware that the secret of
Apple's success right now is rooted firmly in the magic that is
Steve
Jobs. The company is also likely aware that Mr. Steve Jobs
makes a terrible employee and is much happier answering to
no one other than his muse.

It is certainly possible that IBM really wants to add a
successful consumer line back into its product lineup, but we
just don't
see it happening. Heck, Disney makes a better fit with Apple
than does IBM, and that's just not saying all that much.

Be that as it may, this makes for a fun rumor for the Mac world
to gnash its teeth on for a while. Have fun.
